Very good news from Big Lottery Fund’s small grants scheme, Awards for All which gives grants from £300 - £10,000. From 1 June, they are running a six month pilot in the Yorkshire and Humber region where they will now fund repeat or ongoing activities.

This means that if you’ve been running a pensioners group for several years, you can apply to them to fund it for a year. If you run summer playschemes, you can ask them to fund the next one. It doesn’t matter whether they or someone else has funded the activities before.

The pilot applies only to groups with a turnover below £30,000. All other conditions remain the same, so if you’ve had £10,000 from them recently you can’t apply again within a year. Guidance notes and application form are on their website.

An important point - the forms and guidance won’t change, so where the form asks on page 3 whether you are asking for repeat/ongoing activities, it’s fine to say ‘yes’, despite the form saying you must put ‘no’ to get funded. You will still need to make a good enough case on the rest of the form that your activity is needed, and that it helps people.

They hope this will encourage bids from small groups doing really important successful work, as they won’t have to try and make the activity look ‘new’ each time they write a bid. This has been a common complaint from many groups, and it’s really good that the Lottery have taken this on board. Awards for All is a good scheme, funding a wide range of activities with a very good success rate - over half the bids are funded. This change makes it even better.

SYFAB will be holding meetings in each district to publicise the fund - watch out for details. We are also happy to look over a form that you’ve filled in. We do this free for groups with no paid worker. Just email it to us.

The Big Lottery Fund came to events SYFAB organised in Barnsley and Rotherham recently, because of low levels of successful applications in those areas. We learned some interesting things from their presentations about the two key grant schemes:

Reaching Communities – the commonest reasons for failure are not identifying need, unclear outcomes, and not fully involving users in the planning and delivery of projects. While the fund maximum is £500k, the panel which makes awards expects any project above £300k to be an example of excellent practice. We ran workshops to help people work on the reasons for failure, but it is clear that the whole need/outcome/activity thread is a tricky one to get your head round. We hope to run separate training sessions on this in the future. The Lottery’s Big Learning Zone has lots of guidance on this and other topics.

Awards for All – around half of applications are funded, so this is a fund with a very high chance of success. Three things can give an eligible bid the highest points score – it is your first application to the fund, your total project costs are less than £10k, and your total income is below £10,000. While you are asked which of the four outcomes your project meets, it is better to explain how you meet one or two well, than try and justify a poor fit with three or four.

Don’t forget, if you are struggling with applications for either of these, SYFAB can help by looking at draft bids and giving feedback. This service is free for small groups (those with no paid worker), and charged at a subsidised rate for other South Yorkshire groups with an income below £300,000. Contact SYFAB for more details.

The Cabinet Office has announced two projects to encourage people to give time and money to local causes.

One is a re-run of a scheme done in March to match fund every pound given to local charities via the donation site localgiving.com. That time, £375,000 was allocated in just three days. This time, £500,000 will be available in September, but it is likely to go just as quickly, so be ready.

The second initiative, the Challenge Prizes, will reward two new ideas which:

involve lots of people in giving better support to older people in their area.

mobilise people to reduce waste in their communities.

Details of how to apply, and how much the prizes will be, have not yet been announced. The scheme will run through NESTA, which supports innovation; they will work with shortlisted groups, and select the winners.

‘Nobody funds core costs’ is a common complaint we hear at SYFAB. The Esmee Fairbairn Foundation, a major funder who give out over £32m in 2010, have made an interesting announcement about this on their website:

“Running costs? Overheads? Core costs? Staff salaries? Revenue costs? Administration?

Whatever you call it, we fund it.

In 2011 we gave £20 million towards organisations’ core running costs such as salaries and overheads, over half of our total grant-making. We know that for organisations to achieve extraordinary things, they need the ordinary things to be funded, and we are happy to do it.

When you apply to us, follow our guidance and make a convincing case for how a grant towards your organisation’s core costs will allow you to make the biggest impact.”

This addresses one of the commonest concerns for groups seeking major funding - but please don’t send in a bid to them for your finance or admin worker without thinking carefully about it. Your work will still need to match the fund’s themes, and you will need to demonstrate how the core funding you request will allow you to improve people’s quality of life. Check out their details on our funders database here (you need to register), or look on the Foundation website. Next the picture of some apples, naturally.

Fundraising is like decorating your living room…90% preparation. You need to allocate time to doing it, and if you fill all the cracks first then sand them down before papering, you’ll get a much better result. Similarly, if you spend a bit of time planning and preparing your funding applications, your results could be similarly improved…

Things are tough in fundraising at the moment. It can be hard to know the best way to present your project or to understand exactly what a funder wants to know about you, and this, coupled with a challenging economic climate can be a toxic mix to anyone seeking funding for their organisation.

The challenges of putting in a good application were demonstrated to us recently at BIG Lottery events in South Yorkshire. The BIG Lottery officers revealed that outside Sheffield, South Yorkshire submits fewer applications than other areas, and they are not as likely to succeed.

Equally, the pressure on funders and the competition applicants can face when applying for funding were outlined by an article in Third Sector magazine last year. They reported the Chief Executive of Children in Need, David Ramsden, as saying that 70% of applications to Children in Need are unsuccessful. They go on to say:
“Of the 30 per cent that were selected, he (David) said not all got the amount they had asked for. Because demand was so strong, his organisation had to make tough decisions about what it would fund.”
www.thirdsector.co.uk/news/1091805

Having established that it’s tough out there, what can you do about it?

SYFAB would suggest preparation is the key to helping you make successful applications and to help you do this, we offer two courses that will help you to prepare for fundraising by helping you to choose suitable funders and avoid common mistakes:

SYFAB’s course Finding Funders will give you the tools to select suitable funders from the outset. It’s a two hour course and by the end of it you will know how to:
•	Find suitable funding opportunities for your organisation using SYFAB’s Funding Search database and Funding News
•	Understand how to get the best out of the SYFAB Funding Search database
•	Sign up to the SYFAB Funding Search and Funding News services.

Here are some recent comments from course attendees about what they had learned:
•	“There is a lot out there; the course leaders are passionate”
•	“The broad range of funders out there and how to apply more successfully”
•	“So much – funding site, search, applying tips and hints!”
•	“How to start up; how to look for funding; who I should be talking to; where to look for funding”
•	“How to find out who to apply to for funding”
•	“Just how much local funding is available”

You don’t need any special IT skills for the course, but you should be familiar with using the Internet and have an email address.
The next courses are running on the following dates:

Date: 18 May 9.30 - 11.30 (refreshments available from 9.15)
Venue: Voluntary Action Barnsley, The Core, County Way, Barnsley S70 2JW
Date: 15 June 9.30 - 11.30 (refreshments available from 9.15)
Venue: Doncaster Women’s Centre, 21 Cleveland Street, Doncaster DN1 3EH

Our Introduction to Fundraising course is a three hour session aimed at people who are new to funding and is a introduction on how to find funders and how to present your project.
By the end of the session you will be able to:
•	Name some sources of charitable funding
•	Identify which sources of funding their project is likely to appeal to and why
•	Gain experience of what a potential donor needs to know about their project in a written format and will be able to describe two or three examples of good writing practice
•	Gain some experience of verbally presenting their projects in front of an audience of peers and describe two or three key aspects to making a clear and effective presentation.

Recent attendees reported that they had learned the following:
•	“Clear letter writing”
•	“Common bid errors”
•	“What it is like making decisions on awarding grants”
•	“Good overview of fundraising”
•	“Feel more confident about having a go and looking into available funding”
•	“Target the funding application very carefully”
•	“Better ways and greater chance of getting funding”

The next courses are running on the following dates:

Date: 18 May 12.30 - 3.30 (refreshments available from 12.15)
Venue: Voluntary Action Barnsley, The Core, County Way, Barnsley S70 2JW
Date: 15 June 12.30 - 3.30 (refreshments available from 12.15)
Venue: Doncaster Women’s Centre, 21 Cleveland Street, Doncaster DN1 3EH

So, no more papering over the cracks…get your sanding blocks ready, set a day aside and get prepared!

BBC Children in Need has to be one of the best known funders in the country. It has a very high profile when collecting the money, and the flip side to this is that every year a very large amount – this year £26million and still counting – is available as grants to groups.

It is a very flexible funder in terms of the groups it will fund, how much, and what activities, so if you work with disadvantaged children and young people aged up to 18, check out what they can offer:

Who? Any constituted not for profit group can apply. You don’t have to be a registered charity.

How much? There is a small grant scheme for up to £10,000, and a larger grant scheme where most awards are for below £100,000.

What for? Capital and revenue costs in projects which benefit disadvantaged children. This can be salaries, and overhead costs relating directly to the project. They will fund projects running between one and three years. ‘Disadvantage’ can cover such things as:

•	Illness, distress, abuse or neglect
•	Any kind of disability
•	Behavioural or psychological difficulties
•	Living in poverty or situations of deprivation (much of Rotherham, when compared to the UK, will fit this)

You will need to show how your project will change the lives of the children for the better. Where possible you should take into account their views and involve them in decisions that affect them.

So who’s been successful locally? Here are some Rotherham groups currently benefiting from Pudsey’s hard work:

•	Base to Beat studio and partners received £78,345 for music and music production workshops and tuition for disadvantaged young people

•	Rotherham United Community Sports Trust £75,472 to provide exercise and healthy life-style activities for disadvantaged young people with poor health

•	Kelford School Rotherham £10,000 to access a riding stable for disadvantaged young people living in South Yorkshire to use together to develop vocational skills

•	Rotherham Advocacy Partnerships £38,289 to support young people with a range of learning disabilities aged 14-18. They will help each young person plan for their future and begin to prepare for adult life and adult services.

To adapt a phrase from another well known funder, THIS COULD BE YOU! If you work with children & young people, this funder is one you should take a good look at.

Gemma Stothard is the Regional Officer for Children in Need. She says “In Rotherham, BBC Children in Need already funds music sessions for young people in Herringthorpe, befriending support for Asian young women, advocacy services for teens and sports and recreation activities at an after school club. Requests from organisations can include sessional workers, salaries, equipment, venue hire and capital expenditure. We’re keen to help more groups access our funds.”

The Santander Foundation is the latest guise of a funder that has been very active over the years, bringing together donations made via the Abbey, Alliance and Leicester, and Bradford and Bingley businesses. In the last few years it has grown considerably, in 2010 making 1,848 grants which totalled over £4million. They have been keen to promote their work in South Yorkshire, and have attended several events to talk to local groups. They will fund registered charities, Friendly Societies, some Industrial and Provident Societies, and credit unions. They now have an upper limit of £10,000 for grants. The Foundation are interested in two areas of work:

Education and training: to help disadvantaged people improve their confidence in a skill, or their understanding of a subject. This does not have to be formal training or lead to a qualification (although these activities are eligible too) but could be part of lifelong learning.
Examples of possible activities include independent living skills, anger management, improving self-esteem, reminiscence projects for older people, art and craft sessions or IT classes.

Financial capability: help disadvantaged people understand how to manage their money. It could include budgeting skills as well as managing the financial challenges that arise from being a carer, unemployment, break up of relationships, disability or ill-health.
Examples of possible activities include costs of running a credit union, delivering financial advice and helping people to understand their benefit entitlement - any project helping people to make informed choices about their finances might meet this priority.

A local charity based in Rotherham has secured a donation relating to this priority to provide financial advice and training to local residents with learning disabilities.
Speakup Self Advocacy aims to support people with learning disabilities to lead independent, inclusive and well supported lives. The donation will fund a trainer for a new project called ‘Budgeting for my life’ which will focus on giving people the necessary skills to budget and manage their money independently on a daily basis. The project has been a tremendous success so far with 55 people enjoying learning how to manage their money.
Anne Ferguson, Principal Officer at Speakup Self Advocacy said: “We are extremely grateful to the Santander Foundation for the donation, which has enabled us to set up this training course. We have also developed a shopping game which is working extremely well at getting the message across.”

Would you like to know more? Alan Eagle, the Foundation Manager, is coming to South Yorkshire shortly to attend ‘Meet the Funder’ sessions, so here is an opportunity to hear first hand about his scheme:

Rotherham: Monday 14 May, 10.30 - 1.00 at Voluntary Action Rotherham, Coke Hill, S60 2HX (with Children in Need)
Sheffield: Tuesday 15 May, 10.30 - 1.00 at The Quaker Meeting House, St James St. Sheffield S1 2EW (with the Key Fund)

Please book for the Rotherham event - places are limited.

The Emerging Issues Fund has £41,000 available in 2012/13. Groups in the area are able to bid for up to £3,000 throughout the year while funds remain.
• Activities aimed at the younger or older sections of the community, or those in need of support
• Activity that seeks to bring communities together
• Activity that promotes community safety
• The costs of tutors and equipment or materials may be included in this.
Applications will be considered monthly; the form and guidance are available from the Area Assembly team.

South East Open Access Young People’s Activities - the Assembly is inviting organisations to tender to provide activities for young people. £25,000 is available in total – groups can tender for all or part of that; details are in a tender brief here. Activities should be:
• Across the four wards
• Free, well publicised and equally open to all local young people aged 11-19
• Suitable for different audiences

An expression of interest form is available from the Assembly team, and needs to be returned by 11 May.

Sheffield Volunteering from the University of Sheffield Students’ Union have been in touch with us to let us know about their Summer Volidays programme.

Summer Volidays is a project run by Sheffield Volunteering, in which charities receive a team of Sheffield University and Student’s Union staff members and a small piece of funding in order to complete a task that would make a big difference to them. They are looking for activities that can be finished in one day, that don’t require any previous experience and that cater for a variety of abilities ( please note that they don’t recruit for fundraising activities). Charities will need to supervise the activity on the day and organise lunch for the volunteers (although funding is available for purchasing lunch). Reasonable expenses up to a maximum of £400 per organisation can be paid.

This year’s teams will be available between 26 - 29 June 2012 and will vary in size between 8 and 40 people.

Please read the guidelines before completing the form and return the finished form to Abigail Lownsbrough no later than 9:00 am on 8 May 2012. You can email, post or deliver your application in person. Sheffield Volunteering will aim to respond to your application within one week to let you know if you have been successful.

You can contact Abigail to ask any questions or discuss any element of how the project works, or what types of activities have been successful in the past.

You can view the guidance here and the application form here.
